| | Guest | Another coffee cup discussion Sitting here with my cup of coffee I was thinking about how we have changed
since we first started cruising.
We first sailed in a balcony cabin and now that we have been around awhile
we always take an inside cabin.
Why? Several reasons:
1. We find there is more useable space because there is no sliding door to
waste almost a full wall.
2. Great for those of us who like to sleep past sunrise because it is still
dark in the cabin.
3. Great for taking a nap (see reason #2)
4. We only spent a short time on the balcony when we had it because it was
so small.
5. If we want to see water, we go topside.
6. Last but not necessarily a consideration it is much cheaper.
I would enjoy hearing from new and old cruisers as to what your desires are
concerning a cabin. | |

| | Guest | Another coffee cup discussion I enjoy the balcony and would likely not cruise without a balcony cabin.
BUT, the reason cruises are my favorite vacation is because I can feel so
free and unattached to the hustle and bustle of the world and just enjoy the
splendor of nature. There is nothing more beautiful to me that the rolling
ocean and nothing more peacefull than sitting on my private balcony and
feeling free of all my cares. Not saying this is why anyone else should
cruise or not. Just that this is what makes a cruise "heavenly" for me. Keep
your wi-fi and your internet cafe. I am on vacation to isolate from the
world not stay connected to it. Give me a good bottle of champagne, a good
book, and a chair on the balcony of a cruise ship and I am in paradise. If I
want to reconnect to the world temporarily, there are ample venues onboard
and in port to do so.

Our first and most of our cruises have been balcony cabins, just a few
O.V.s. As long as we can afford it, it will be balcony cabins for us.

We never had a problem with space in a balcony cabin, they are usually
larger then the ocean view or inside cabins.

Neither of us has a problem sleeping late or napping on a cruise. Most
ships have heavy curtains if light is a problem.

Yes, most balconies are small, but they are still usable. Depending on
the balcony/ship/cruise line we sometimes have breakfast on our balcony.
It is so nice not having to get showered and dressed before breakfast.
Other then that we don't spend a lot of time on the balcony, but it is
nice to go out in the morning in a robe to check out the weather. The
balcony is also a nice place to relax while waiting for your spouse to
get ready and in the evening to sit and relax a little before turning in
for the night.

But you can't do this in your bathrobe.LOL
> 6. Last but not necessarily a consideration it is much cheaper.
Once DH retires we may have to give up a balcony so we can cruise more
often. When this happens we will go for an OV cabin, not an inside. One
of our reasons for cruising is our love of seeing the ocean and you
can't do that from an inside cabin.

Gee...I'd love to take part in one of these group cruises but my work
schedule is such that the weeks I can be away from the office have
just never coincided with any of the cruises that have been
scheduled. I have very narrow windows for when I can take vacation. I
have the vacation days, just no time to use them. :-(
One day....

We have the opposite problem, Kevin doesn't have enough vacation time!!
Would one of your windows be early jan.? Kevin and I are cruising on the
Emerald Princess jan. 5th, not part of a group cruise this time.

Unfortunately, no. Very busy time of year for me....darkest days of
winter - exactly when I need to get away the most!!!!

If we can't get together on a cruise, maybe we can get another NY/NJ/Md
land gathering going later this summer.

Rosalie, I'm surprised that you even take ship motion into
consideration, when choosing a cabin on a big ship...with all your
small boat sailing, I just kind of figured that any motion felt on a
cruise ship would be so insignificant to you seasoned sailors.

Well it IS. (Insignificant that is) I have never been on a cruise ship where I
felt the motion was that bad.
But if I AM going to be on one, why not get a comfortable quiet cabin?
Sit and look at the water? BTDT. I can do it on our own boat, and we can wear
the clothing of our choice while underway, or nothing except shoes and a PFD
should we desire (Bob doesn't let me out on deck without shoes on). I don't
need to pay extra to do it on a ship. I feel about it like I feel about fishing
- I think they are both sort of boring. (Boring is good - it is relaxing - but
I don't want to do too much of it or it ceases to be relaxing) | |
