Airport restrictions

My husband and I are having an argument, and I've looked on the
internet and can't find the answer.

We are flying from Newark to Heathrow and then to Shannon. I thought
I could take an empty water bottle through the screening, and then
fill it at the tap and take it on the plane. Or alternately buy some
water in the waiting area. He says I will not be able to take any
liquids onto the plane including things bought in the waiting area.

I'm pretty sure I won't be able to do that at Heathrow, but that's not
as important.

Rosalie, I can't swear about international restrictions, but once past
security, anything you purchase, you should be able to bring on board.
You have already been cleared, as has the merchandise for sale. I know
for a fact that bringing an empty container through security is fine.

Yes you can, but why? I have noticed improved water and drink service on
my last few international flights (including on USAirways)

Because I'm often thirsty while we are still loading the plane and
before there's any service.

We carried four bottles of rum on board as carry on luggage
at San Juan last December. This was purchased at a duty
free shop AFTER security. We had to open and drink, or discard,
the can of soda we had tried to carry in from the curb, however.

Yes we are changing terminals in LHR.

Would they give us the chance to drink it before boarding :)

How would they know whether it purchased before boarding or
on another flight leg, out of curiosity? No one mentioned that
fact to us at the airport, thanks for the warning.

If I am traveling with a cane (which I have never done before) does
that count as an item?

STT might be a slight deviation form the rest of the rules as one does
not have to clear customs and additional security after landing from
STT, but for true international flights, the secondary screening is
where you are caught.
