| | Guest | SS United States I heard a few years ago that Norwegian Cruise Line had purchased the SS
United States and it appeared as though they'd refurbish and introduce the
ship into its fleet.
Has anyone heard any updates on this? As far as I know, it's still rusting
in a port somewhere in Philly.
Thanks,
Mike Taylor

DH drove past it a few weeks ago and it is still sitting and rusting
under the Walt Whitman Bridge in Philly.

Yes. Then the PSA would be irrelevant. Cabotage laws (like the PSA) are
designed to protect domestic carriers from foreign competition; thus, while
a 100% US passenger ship operation is free to service just US ports, the PSA
prohibits a foreign-flagged ship from doing so. There are similar
protections of air carriers, e.g., while it would make perfect sense for
Nippon Airways to fly from LAX to Honolulu to Tokyo and vice versa, the law
prevents them from competing with US-based carriers on that mainland-island
domestic leg. | |

| | Guest | U S UNITED STATES In the early '60s I was on a Navy radar picket ship on patrol in the North
Atlantic. One night while we were crusing at 10 knots our surface radar
picked up a contact coming up astern at 30 knots relative speed (40 knots
total). It was the SS United States. It was an unforgetable sight as it
zipped by a mile or so away brightly lighted.

First page of the South Jersey section which is section B and I think
the article was on B6 or B7. You must get the same edition that I get.

Having spent the better part of a year driving past the UNITED STATES as she
rusted in South Philadelphia, my vote would be to spend the $500 million on
a new ship.
It worked for Cunard.

IMHO, the only way she will make money carrying cruise passengers is if she
is melted down and the steel used to build a new ship. | |
