Passport Processing Time
We applied for new passports on June 1st...they were processed in
Portsmouth, NH. It took 24 days! Wonder why NH with passport centers
located in Houston?...no matter, I'm happy to receive them... They also
returned the old ones today under separate cover.
Our old ones did not expire until 4 May, 2010, but since we have the Viking
cruise in December and the Oceania in March, it was too uncomfortable to
depend on new ones to arrive within the six month period required. The new
passports are beautiful inside with pictures of historical events, lines
from the Constitution and Declaration of Independence and quotes from famous
people and presidents.
Now I'm ready to cruise again!

They want you to have a valid passport when you
leave or they catch you if you've overstayed your
visa or run out of money and throw you out.

Hi, Joseph,
France may not have the 6-month rule, but you can check the country-by-
country expiry rules (6-month is most common, but there are many
variations) at the State Dept.'s travel website.

Gotcha! And now that you fully explain, I recall another instance
where what the State Dept. said was not what the country's own web
information stated.
You are always a stickler for detail and trying to get to the most
authoritative answer, Joseph. A man after my own heart!
But more importantly, a commendable trait in a TA. I know your clients
are in good hands and that you are giving them the best info you can
get.
Cheers, hope evening is an improvement on the day!

Our renewals took five weeks from mailing to receipt. Our situation
might be a bit different in that both of ours had expired. I let mine
expire after I retired and was no longer doing overseas travel on
business, that was 2002, and Gail's expired earlier this year. I had to
do the long form (start over) and she could do the short.
Interestingly, our old passports and new ones all arrived on the same
day, each in its own mailing envelope. Our TA breathed a huge sigh of
relief when I emailed her the new numbers and expiration dates :-)

Our renewals took about 3 weeks. (The passports were still valid for a
few months, but would have expired before our August cruise.)
The old passports did not come with them. I remember commenting to my
wife that it would be nice to have them as a souvenir of our travels.
Mine then came the next day, but not hers. Hers came 6 days later with
the same postmark from New Hampshire. I happened to be at the mailbox
when the postman came. I pointed out the postmark and told him the other
one sent the same time from the same place had taken 6 days less. He
just shrugged and smiled.

A Texan and a New Yorker were talking. The Texan told the New Yorker
that it took a train three days to go across the state. The New
Yorker replies "yeah, we got slow trains too."
