I'm thinking of going to Argentina in the beginning of December for
about 8 days. I am going to fly into Buenos Aires and would like to
spend at least a few days there. Any suggestions as to where else in
Argentina I should go? I'm up for anything, although camping out is
not really an option. Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.
Summer in Buenos Aires is hot and humid, so you may want to leave the city
for a couple of days to get to a cooler climate. One suggestion: Bariloche,
in the mountains, where there are pine forests and lakes, and a couple of
excursions that are very popular with tourists (the Circuito Chico is one I
took, which is a half-day bus tour; there are more extensive ones as well).
Another option is to take a day trip across the Rio de la Plata to Colonia
del Sacramento, a small town in Uruguay that has some Colonial-era buildings
and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; I've never done it, but I think that
you take either a ferry or hydrofoil across in the morning, get lunch and a
short tour, then get back to Buenos Aires late in the day.
A popular day trip that doesn't take you that far is to go to the Tigre
delta, just outside the city of Buenos Aires, where there are lots of little
islands formed by the channels of water; various excursions will take you
out there and past the many houses on those islands and peninsulas.
Yet another option, if heat and humidity don't bother you, would be Iguazú
falls; right now the water level is at a 20-year low, but predictions are
that rains in the next few months will bring it back to normal.
I would predict, though, that you might like Buenos Aires enough that you
won't want to leave at all. Eight days is not really much time there, and
there is a lot to do and see.
Good luck!
