| | Guest | Mayan Riviera - Renting a Car I've been to the Mayan Riviera six times now (the
last being this weekend), and all but once I've
rented a car. None of the people I know who have
gone rent cars and have told me it never even
crosses their mind. I guess that makes me the odd
ball, but being able to drive down the coast to
check out Puerta Adventuras, Akumal and Tulum
without having to pay for a cab or depend on tour
companies is a lot of fun for me. And other than
ridiculously slow service at the rental companies
(checking in/out), I haven't had any problems
(e.g., overcharges).
I'm sure there a lot of other resources, but the local
publication Sac-Be has brief descriptions of the
various areas so you can find one that interests you.
Based on their description of Akumal, I decided to
visit the area for the first time this trip and really
enjoyed it. | |

| | Guest | Mayan Riviera - Renting a Car I agree with you. You can do a lot of exploring with a rental car. Last
time I was there, we stayed at Playa del Carmen and rented the wheels. One
day, ended up driving all the way south to the Mexico/Belize border; there
are 2 towns/cities near the border, Chetumal on the Mexican side and Corozal
on the Belize side. Though the rental agreement said we could not take it
out of the country, we crossed into Belize and stayed overnight at this
small family-run hotel in Corozal. Great memories!

How much does it cost to rent a car for a week, or for just a day?

| | Guest | Mayan Riviera - Renting a Car Depends on a lot of factors like the season or time of year, size of the
car, your age and a few others. Personally, for renting at the Cancun
airport, I have always found the best rates with Avis. However, you need to
spend some time checking all the car rental companies on the internet and
hunt for the best rate.

| | Guest | Mayan Riviera - Renting a Car I think that if you are staying outside of Cancun and want to do some
exploring, you should rent a car.
A lot of people however don't want to worry about things like that.
Taking a tour seems easier and if they are all inclusive, you don't
usually want to leave the resort because you are either happy where you
are or want to get your money's worth.
A lot of people that go to beach destinations on vacation choose an A/I
hotel and never leave it . Their idea of a vacation is lounging by the
pool all day and not having to go far for a meal.
But if you like some adventure and want to do things on your own time,
a rental car is certainly the way to go.
Drive safely!!!! I mean it. ....as speed bumps pop up out of nowhere
and drivers without headlights and breaklights can be fairly normal!

I understand that a lot of people like to do this, but I will
never understand it. Half the fun is getting out, exploring
and interacting with the locals. And I've always found the
locals here to be extremely nice. I just wish I spoke the
language so I could interact more :)

Get on a local bus. You get to interact with locals.
