I'd be more concerned about the distances were I in your place. Mexico is a
very big country and if you have 10 days and set off from San Diego to
explore Mexico by car, you won't make it very far into Mexico... or, if you
do, you'll see more freeway than anything else.

I'd recommend that you try flying directly into Mexico, be it either Mexico
City or Guadalajara and start from there. If you need to be in Los Angeles
for whatever reason, then this is still an option, there are plenty of
flights between LAX and various Mexican cities.

Also, don't be afraid to fly into one of the tourist towns like Cancun or
Puerto Vallarta. It's easy enough to get out of those places and explore the
"non-commercial" Mexico.

As Iceman pointed, the bus network is very extensive and can also be very
comfortable. Don't think Greyhound, think about the kind of seat pitch you'd
expect to find in the first class cabin of a trans-Atlantic flight and now
imagine it in a bus! That's what's called de lujo (deluxe) service.

ps. x-posted to r.t.l-a as I'm sure there are more Mexico experts there than
there are in r.t-u-c.

When we went with our kids (who were 12 and 9 at the time), we would
take the large commercial buses (first class -- a/c, movies on board,
etc.) to the city or town we wanted to visit. Then we would hire a cab
driver for the day to take us around. It worked out to be rather
inexpensive, and the cab driver knew how to get around, so there was no
getting lost and losing time.
