Default Yucatan: hike from XCaret to Belize along the beach

Hello,

My father and I would like to hike from XCaret to Belize along the
beach (or as far as we can go) in May 2007. Does anyone have any
information regarding this area? Maps, hotels, mileage,
villiages/settlements?

Thank you,
Wendy

This isn't doable. While Mexican law regards the beaches as public
property, it doesn't work out that way in practice--especially on the Mayan
Riviera. In places there are uniformed security people who will keep you off
of "their" beach unless you're a registered guest. In places even this
wouldn't even work, a reputed drug lord is reported to own a big section of
ocean front property in that area. It isn't one big beach from Playa to
Belize. There are numerous geographic obstacles such as swamps and lagoons.
With short exceptions here and there you would mostly be forced to use the
nearest road, which in many cases is the main highway. On the Xpu Ha beach,
for example: you would forced off the beach at the "Eco Park", if not
sooner; you would have to go the main highway and probably couldn't get back
on the beach until around the Copa Cabana; after a short walk you would be
forced off the beach again at the Robinson Club; because of the swamps in
the area you would be forced back to the highway at the X-9 road after you
back tracked to get to it. About the only good news is that you could pay
Samwell a small fee to camp on his place on the beach at the end of the X-9
road, because you wouldn't see much of the beach that day and there would be
many days that were even worse.
