Default Benito Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico

I just returned from Oaxaca. Was disappointed that the annual (I am
told) teacher strike had completely shut down the zocalo in Oaxaca.
Also discovered the Hotel Senorial is closed up permanently. But
discovered a new treasure in the state of Oaxaca.

>From Teotitaln (the weaver's village) about 20 kilometers up in the

mountains is a real treasure. It is the very small village of Benito
Juarez. Inhabited by maybe 150 Zapotecs they are trying to cash in on
eco-touristic features and have a very nice tourist information center
(Spanish only). They have constructed some very nice cabins and
established 3 restaurants. It would be a great place for someone to
spend a few days who enjoys hiking, mountain biking or fishing. But the
town is very isolated. The bus only goes there on Wednesday and Friday
and there is literally nothing between Teotitlan del Valle and Benito
Juarez.

The ride up is incredible. You go through several ecological zones and
end up in pine forest with orchids in the trees. Take a jacket as it is
almost always a little cool and even more so at night. Check it out.
Also, take cash. No ATM, Casa de Cambio or other financial services
here.

Thanks, Ferguson. I'm heading to Oaxaca in 2 weeks, and I will check
out Benito Juarez. It sounds fantastic. I also didn't realize I'm
arriving right at the start of the guelaguetza, and I haven't booked
any rooms in Oaxaca, Oaxaca yet.
