| | Guest | Is Venezuela off-limits for Americans? Hi. We just got it into our heads to try to see Angel Falls, which we had
tried to do years ago and couldn't accomplish. It seems that facilities are
now in place not far from the falls to accomodate tourists.
Now I can't find a flight to Venezuela from the US. Everything seems to go
in by the back door, ie Bogota. The last time we flew to Caracas from NY,
it was a 4 hr flight, and now you'd do well to get there in 24 hrs. I think
I understand the politics, but does anyone know a good way to get there?
From NY to Isla Margarita, it looks like an ordeal of 24 hrs and 7 flights!
Is this really possible in this day and age?
sorry, just venting.

No, Venezuela is not off limits to U.S. citizens. My recollection, though,
is that the U.S. government recently banned flights by the Venezuelan
carrier from our airports, saying the planes were not safe. Venezuela
threatened to retaliate, but I wasn't sure that they did until I saw your
post. If you can't get there from here, I guess they did.

Miami to Caracas used to be $199 return. Caracas used to be one of the
cheapest places to go in the Caribbean, Central America, or South
American region except for maybe Nassau.

I think our gov't makes it difficult to go to Cuba, too. Actually, I'd love
to see Old Havana. | |

Then fly to Mexico City and go to Cuba. Easy out of Mexico. Just say, "Eh"
at the end of every sentence, and people will think you're a
Canadian......... | |
