Default Getting to Chichen Itza Ruins From Tulum

Hello to Latin America Travel Group :)

I was wondering:

1. How far is Tulum to Chichen Itza Ruins?

2. What are the ways, approximate costs and time it takes to get to the
Ruins from Tulum in particular Gran Bahia Principe Tulum?

3. Is the ruin open for climbing as I heard that one of the main
'pyramids' at the ruins is closed?

4. Any other suggestions/tips?

Appreciate your time on this, much thanks,

July

Default Getting to Chichen Itza Ruins From Tulum

I was just there last week:

Visited Playa del Carmen, Merida, and Tolum.

The main pyramid is closed for climbing, at least when I was there.
Wikipedia says it's because someone fell and died a few months back. I
didn't mind, it made my pictures a lot better.

Try and go earlier. With tour busses you'll arrive and depart with the
masses, Chichen is a big place, if you go real early it will be cool
and lots of time to explore.

Consider renting a car, I did from Cancun. The roads are in great
shape for Mexico, it was affordable for the week, just take out the
additional insurance.

Consider staying at the Maria de la Luz hotel in Valladolid the night
before Chichen. Great town - and on the way back from Chichen hit the
Cenote in Diznup (sp)? Wonderful experience last week, considering
the temperature was between oppressive and searing

I believe there's a road from Tolum to Valladolid, otherwise from Tolum
you have to take 307 north to 180, which is a bit indirect.

I was in Chichen Itza in February, and yes, the Castillo is closed to
climbing. An 80 year old woman fell to her death from the pyramid a few
months before. However, there is virtually no climbing of ANY of the
ruins at Chichen... not even the Temple of the Warriors (you can no
longer go up there to see the chac mool statue or the serpent columns).
I have a feeling that the prohibition to climbing is more than just a
safety issue. It had been about 20 years since I had been there, and
when I saw the HUGE numbers of tourists arriving daily on tour busses, I
began to think it might also have to do with preservation of the ruins.
When you consider the 1000s of tourists who visit every day, I don't
doubt that after a few decades the countless footsteps would begin to
wear away the stones.
