| | Guest | Return ticket...does all of Latin America require it? I'm planning a trip to central and possibly south America and was
wondering if I'm going to have a problem going by road or even flying
sometimes (like from Panama to Colombia.) The last thing I want is a
return ticket because I have no idea how long its going to take and even
where I'm going to go. | |

| | Guest | Return ticket...does all of Latin America require it? If you are going to be flying then you will most likely need a return
ticket and onward ticket. If you are going to be staying at a place
more than 90 days then you will also require a visa.
If you are driving, then that is a different story.

We were not asked. I was catching a ship in Valparaiso, so did not have a
continuing airline ticket.

Can't answer your question directly but I assume that if, for instance,
you're taking a leave of absence from your job, a letter from your
employer saying that you're expected to be back to work whatever number
of months later, that could work too (that's what I hope to be doing
next year for a May to September exploration of Central and perhaps
South America).

I don't think a letter from Joeblow Company Inc is going to carry much
weight 7000 miles from home. Anybody could print up anything they want.

Visas are easily obtainable and are not an issue.
Why do posters delete the original message? Here it is......

I didn't mention driving. How could someone drive AND fly? Kind of
hard to pack your car on the plane....:) Obviously if I'm flying
partly, I'll be traveling my bus as well.
So I arrive my bus to the border town of some 3rd world banana republic
and they look unimpressed with a wad of traveler's checks. Am I
screwed? Are there websites that discuss the current policies of each
country? This could really mess you up if you're floating through
central and south America.

| | Guest | Return ticket...does all of Latin America require it? 1. Traveler's checks? I have not used them in the last ten years. ATMs
are much easier.
2. Flew one way to BA in Febuary from Miami. They questioned me At the
Miami airport for two minutes but then stopped. I told them that I had
no firm plans on the return but that I might book a cruise back. That
is what turned out.

About how much money were you carrying that you could prove you were
self sufficient? | |

When flying from the US to Honduras I was asked by the airlines in the
US at both Seattle and Houston for proof of onward or return passage.
When traveling by air from El Salvador to Honduras, I was not asked. I
was not asked for proof or return or onward passage while traveling by
car or bus to El Salvador or Guatemala from Honduras nor was I asked on
the return from those countries to Honduras.
