Cancun vacation The family went down to Cancun for the first time. We had a great
time. Stayed at the Royal Mayan, at a small bunch of condominiums
right down on the beach. Fairly nice condo with a spectacular view
of the sea.
Went snorkeling at Xel-ha, which was just OK. A few fun fish but it
wasn't near as nice as our trip to Puerto Morelos and snorkeling
there with a local guy off of his boat a little off shore on the
northern end of the Mesoamerican Reef. That was really nice.
The guide actually jumped in the water and we followed him
around and saw a bunch of great stuff. At first, when I realized
that he wanted us to follow him, I wasn't very enthusiastic, but
he showed us a bunch of great stuff. Went to two places. Ate
at a tiny restaurant right up from the pier and off a little side
road. Delicious food. We got tacos and tamales. Great hot
sauce. Really hot.
Went scuba diving with Tank-Ha out of Playa Del Carmen. Went
all the way over to Cozumel to dive the Santa Rosa wall and then
the Paradiscio. Rough trip out there in a little vote. Even rougher
on the way back. Very few conveniences on the boat. No toilet,
no fresh water to wash our gear off with. And we had to wade
out to the boat. Still very nice. Viz a little disappointing at
around 70 feet. Grand Cayman was nicer. At least twice the
viz with many more things growing on the wall.
Went to Chichen Itza. Very nice. So mysterious to see such a
magnificent civilization that disappeared for unknown reasons.
Had some trouble navigating. We rented a Ford Explorer to
get around in. Poor maps and not too many road signs.
Big waves almost every day at the beach. Hard to do anything
other than just battle the waves unless you were willing to go
out into deeper water where they were just rollers and not
breaking yet.
