Default Beaches in Playa del Carmen

Hi all,

In the spring or summer of 2006, I'll probably end up in one of the few
spanish schools in PDC, Mexico to study spanish and enjoy the beach at
the same time. I'll most likely be staying with a host family. I'd like
to know if there is good access to public beaches in PDC or if they
pretty much all belong to resorts and hotels along the shoreline.

The beach is public access for miles.

This is true in theory, but in practice the resorts in Mexico often
control access to the beach. In many places you will find security guards
insuring that their guests are not disturbed by having outsiders come onto
"their" beach. I have experienced this first hand. Public access to the
beaches is a major problem in that area. That said, in Playa del Carmen
proper, if you don't mind crowds, you shouldn't have any problem getting
onto the beach.
