Costa Rico for the winter

Can one just fly into this country and tell customs "I'm here for the
winter," or do they want to see a reservation?
I would expect a return ticket is a must.

The airlines won't let you board the plane to Costa Rica without a return
ticket because if you arte refused entry they would have to fly you back.
You are allowed to stay for 90 days at a time and then must leave for 72
hours.
