| | Guest | Mexico-Yucatan safety I keep reading how crime increased in Mexico lately. How bad is it? I'm
specially thinking about kidnapping. I'm planning a return trip this winter
with my family, been there last here and I didn't feel unsafe once.
Is the crime increase specifically in Mexico city or does it affect Yucatan,
Isla Mujeres region?
thanks for any info! | |

| | Guest | Mexico-Yucatan safety The serious crime problems in Mexico primarily affect Mexico City and
the border towns. The Yucatan is not considered a high crime region,
normal common sense is adequate. (I take special and unusual
precautions when I go to Mexico City, which I consider in a crime class
by itself).

| | Guest | Mexico-Yucatan safety We spent a week in Mexico City this past January...we walked wherever we
wanted to go and had a marvelous time in a vibrant city. It's like any
major city in the world. Use your head and stay out of areas known for
crime but don't deny yourself a wonderful cultural and enriching experience.
I doubt very much if you will find much crime on Isla Mujeres. As the song
goes "Don't Worry, Have Fun". Sheila

You are safer in any tourist beach location in Mexico than in Miami
Beach.
Reports of crime and kidnapping in Mexico relate to inland places far
off the standard US/Canadian tourist path.

| | Guest | Mexico-Yucatan safety You won't be kidnaped anyhow, if you don't go claiming some connection to a
well-known wealthy family. For God's sake, the criminals are in it for
money, and they don't take chances when they don't know the potential.
Worry about hurricanes soaking you out in Yucatan, not about being kidnaped.

| | Guest | Mexico-Yucatan safety Thanks for the reply, but I'm from Canada, according to R. Ferguson's post,
homicide rate=2/100000 here vs 17 for Mexico...

| | Guest | Mexico-Yucatan safety I lived in D.F.for 7 months and I had no problem, but DF has a serious
crime problem (Street Crime) Plaza Garabadi is where most tourist get
hit, they walk around with theirs camaras around the neck and don't pay
attention on what's going on around them, before they known it they got
5-10 street kids knocking them down and stealing everything.
Green Taxis (Volkswagons) Always, Always avoid them!!!

| | Guest | Mexico-Yucatan safety True, tourists are not favored targets for kidnapping in Mexico. As far
as the border towns are concerned many Americans do cross into Nuevo
Larado and alike and involve themselves in the drug trade and of course
they get themselves killed. This has been happening for years, no
surprise to me.
