Default How, where and how much?

Planning a first time trip to Cancun in March of 2006... There will be
5 of us going.

I am looking for anyone that has somewhat of detailed information,
pictures...recommendations for hotels, who to use to book for this
trip...

We will be leaving from Jacksonville, Florida but are willing to drive
anywhere in Florida for a better deal....

I would prefer a cruise but flight will be ok...

Length of stay would be 3-5 days.

Thank you for reading this far!

Hell, the _average_ stay in Cancun is only 6 days.

It would help if we had a better idea of what sort of accomodations
you're looking for, what sort of budget you're working with and what you're
trying to do. If you just want a few days of sun and sand Cancun will work
alright. If you're trying to see Mexico you're headed in the wrong
direction--you won't find it there. For the sun and sand type trip talk to
some travel agents. If you want to see Mexico let us know and there are a
number of people here who can help.

Runge has a point. With your time frame you should decide if you want a
fancy boat ride or some time in Mexico, but you really don't have time for
both.

I mostly agree with Brian except for this bit. Tourists can get a
temporary import permit for their vehicle. The fee is the same regardless of
the value of the car. You either put up a $300 cash bond or use a credit
card for the bond so the Ministry of Finance has some assurance that you'll
take the vehicle back out of Mexico. If you drive a beater and it dies you
either have to put it in bonded storage or give it to the Mexican government
to clear your temporary import permit. If you don't clear your temporary
import permit the Mexican government assumes you sold it in Mexico when try
to get the next one. The OP really doesn't have the time to drive to Cancun
anyhow, from the Matamoros to Cancun is a bit over a 2 day drive for
experienced travelers.

Speaking of temporary import permits: I just learned that in the next
year the vehicle entry points are being moved to the southern border of
Sonora. Vehicles entering Mexico through Nogales will still stop at the 21km
checkpoint for customs and visas, but you won't need an import permit for
Sonora. The Sonora Only Free permits have been costing the state of Sonora
$700,000 a year. The Ministry of Finance has also been threatening serious
fines because they lost track of 25,000 cars.
