You're really talking about two different things. In Mexico you want the
standard Ladatel card available at just about any pharmacia.

Variety stores & supermarts too. Best to have
more than 1 source as Ladatels are much in use
and stores get sold out.

We call Mexico from Texas a lot and those cards that you think scammy
are very cheap and useful. Much better rates than MCI.
But Technobarb set you straight on this regarding cards for use IN
Mexico. | |

If you buy a LadaTel card for P100 you get a P25 bonus. It costs P5/min to
call back to the states using the card. Dan

Those cards, which are mostly a scam, are for calling FROM the USA to
Mexico. They don't work IN Mexico.
When you get to Mexico, you will find two types of pay phones. One are
phones put up by private individuals which look like US standard pay
phones, which take credit cards. These are scams, avoid these. The
other are phones put up by TELMEX, the national phone company. These
do not take money, but rather a computer chip card in a slot. The
cards, called LADATEL, are sold by most any store. Currently you can
get a 125 peso bonus card for 100 pesos. Its 5 pesos per minute to
call the US. Most of the newer model pay phones have a display that
counts down your money as it is used up.
Obviously, the LADATEL cards are also useful for making calls, local
and long distance, within Mexico, or to anyplace else.
ALWAYS make long distance calls to the USA from a TELMEX payphone.
NEVER use off-brand payphones, and NEVER use a hotel phone. You will
pay if you do. | |
