Sorry can't recommend a hotel in Caracas - I stayed in one but would
not go back there.
Definitely bring US$ - quite a few local tour operators require US$
payments and I found it very easy to exchange US$ throughout Venezuela
(often at a better rate than the official 1600). I'm not sure if you
can get Bolivars in Germany - I could not exchange then in the UK. A
word of warning - do not exchange too much as I ended up with Bolivars
that I could not exchange back to US$.
I spent 4 weeks touring Venezuela in 2003 - where you want to go
depends on your interests.
Los Llanos (4 days) - wildlife spotting
Rio Caura (3 days) - River journey, wildlife
Angel Falls (4 days) - Treking and scenic flight
Orinoco Delta (3 days) - River journey and wildlife spotting
Morchima National Park (3 days) - Beaches, reefs
Merida (5 days) - Trecking, Paragliding, horse riding, white water
rafting
The rest of the time was spent travelling between these locations -
two other places were recommended to me but I did not have time to
reach them Roraima (table mountain that can be climbed) and Los Roques
(reef archipelago 170km off the coast)
The only place that I felt threatened by crime was in Caracas itself -
elsewhere I did not feel at all intimidated by the risk of crime.
I snorkeled in Morchima NP but ended up diving in Trinidad & Tobago -
had good reports about Los Roques though.
I hope this helps.
