Default Can you still Climb Chichen Itza?

I just read a thread in my other post that it may no longer be allowed
to climb Chichen Itza? Does anyone know if this is true?
I will be so dissappointed, since I was sick the day we went there 20
years ago on my honeymoon and could merely muster a wave & smile to my
husband to the top from my bench on the ground. I was really looking
forward to it.

Last November it was still possible to climb the outside of the Castillo,
the tallest temple, and the inside. There are usually open entrances inside
the Nunnery but, visitors are not allowed to climb any of the other temples.
The rope on the stairs has cut quite a groove into the soft limestone. It
would be unfortunate if they closed the Castillo because some of the best
artwork at Chichen is up on the top. In recent years there has always been
an ambulance parked near the Castillo.

There was a recent program on PBS on the conquistadors. The episode on
Cortez showed the narrator going ashore at Tulum, which apparently wasn't
grand enough to suit the producers, because they then show him walking
around Chichen without explaining that the temples they're showing aren't at
Tulum.

It was open to climbing as late as January. I climbed it on Christmas
Day 2003, quite memorable.

It is still possible to climb Chichen Itza. I was there last week.
While many of the ruins are off limits, two sides of the main
structure at Chichen Itza are open for all to climb. I understand
from our tour guide that there are certain times that they don't all
you up but these are limited to the vernal and autumnal equinoxs and
other special events.

Have a great time.
