| | Guest | Driving from Puerto Vallarta to Cancun Hi,
A friend and I are planning on renting a car and driving from Puerto
Vallarta to Cancun. Does anybody have any experience doing this? I
looked at renting a compact car from Alamo for cheap (my firend and I
are both students, and therefore we are on tight budgets). I have no
nknowlegde on the conditions of the roads, so am not sure if a compact
car would be the way to go. any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks

In general the Mexican toll roads are equal to our toll roads and the
free roads are similar to secondary roads in the west, except that they
often lack shoulders. There are, of course, exceptions.
On a tight budget Mexico's excellent bus service is the way to go.
Between the cost of the rental, road tolls and Mexico's relatively expensive
gas driving that far will be fairly expensive. Get a map and look at the
distances. One week is a very short time for the amount of country you're
talking about covering.

Opps, that should read: In general the Mexican toll roads are equal to our
*freeways*.

> Alycompact is a great way to go in Mexico, for long distance on main
highways. But I'd suggest that a Vallarta to Cancun road trip would be
expensive for someone on a tight budget. You're really talking two seperate
trips here.If I were you I'd spend the time relaxing in Vallarta, not
driving like a madman to Cancun. You haven't mentioned a timeframe though.
Its feasible if you have three weeks or more. If not, its a lot of drive
time and expense for such a short trip, particularly if the budget
matters.......expenses add up fast on a road trip, but by staying put the
money goes a lot farther. Spend the money on better meals and relaxing in
Vallarta.........Howard | |

| | Guest | Driving from Puerto Vallarta to Cancun That is one looong drive you are looking at.
You might get to the beach at CanCun and have to turn around for the drive
back. | |

That's a long drive for someone on a tight budget. How long are you planning
to take to get from Puerto Vallarta to Cancun?
What I'd suggest would be to take buses. They're cheap and they save you
worrying about the roads... and the price of gas.
