Greetings,

Cochabamba has a nice climate but north of the city is the most attractive
part.

We stayed at the Hostal colonial, in Calle Junin, 30m north of Av Las
Heroines.
It is behind a secure gate and in a nice setting. It was US$20 per double
con ducha privado, a bit overpriced considering that the washbasin was held
up with some wire and one of the power points was definitely dangerous.
However the staff were pleasant and will do your ironing for reasonable
price.

The house of Patino (Palacio de Portales) is well worth a visit and whilst
in that area just northand very close to the river, we found a very good
fish restaurant, sorry, name forgotten. Other good restaurants in Avda
Ballivián just south of the river

We were approached by a policeman (in civvies) on Colina San Sebastian, who
wanted to see our passport original (we only carried copy, which is
legitimate, whatever someone may tell you to the contrary) and wanted to
know what we had in our daypacks. He produced Police ID with his foto but I
asked for his driving licence and also got him to remove his sun specs also
so as to make a better check on both documents. He proved to be genuine. It
seems that Colina San Sebastian is a 'meeting place' for the druggies.
There have been 'false police' in the city. We then showed him the day
pack contents, after which he shook hands with us and wished us a pleasant
holiday.
Apparently there were 2 Bolivianos working with 2 Italians in the drugs
business in the city .

If you are travelling from Sucre, try to get a day bus, the scenery is
spectacular, unfortunately , we only saw it under a full moon on a night bus
(12hrs).

Cheers, philipj Tasmania, Oz
