| | Guest | Lima-Ayacucho-Abancay-Lima + Tingo Maria Hi all,
I'll be in Peru in July and I want to travel though the Apurimac-Ene
Valleys. Anyone knows how long it takes to do : Lima-Ayacucho,
Ayacucho-Andahuyalas-Abancay, and if there are planes from Abancay to
Liam?
Also looking for any lodging advice in this area, and any advice you
would think useful about safety.
Another part of my trip will be Tingo Maria, Monzon Valley and
Tocache. I've done it last year so I know how to get there, but
could'nt find any truly decent hotel. Any advice welcome too!
Last thing, I'm also looking for a decent/nice place to stay in
Miraflores/San Isidro, around 20$, safe and close to all conveniences
ie Internet cafe.
Thaaannks a lot!
Cheers,

I can only comment on Abancay. It's a nice place and I did not feel
insecure even though some policemen (real ones) came to me and advised me on lodging and general security. Maybe they just wanted to sell me a taxi ride with their friend though. In any case, being the only traveller in town I felt much safer than e.g in Cuzco. For sightseeing there is a semi-interesting inca stone on the road to Cuzco and an old bridge closer to town which I did not check out. You can also do a horse treck to some Inca ruin in the vicinity.
I stayed in the blue hostal opposite the bus station (police
recommended!, forgot the name but may look it up if necessary) which was quite
ok.
I don't think there is an airport in Abancay. I took a night-bus from
Nazca which came from Lima as far as I know. So it is probably a 24
hours bus ride Abancay-Lima. Alternatively you might go to Cuzco and
take a plane from there (not much faster I presume).
Enjoy your trip

| | Guest | Lima-Ayacucho-Abancay-Lima + Tingo Maria I flew to Ayacucho from Lima and it took about one hour.
My return flight was cancelled
so I was obliged to take a tourist bus leaving at about 21.30 and arriving
at Lima bus station at about 06.00
Ayacucho is a small Cuzco.. but everything was spoiled at the time of my
visit.
hotels were bad and dirty..
The only restaurant i felt like entering belonged to a man from Belgium. and
it was a few kms out of Ayacucho.
Ayacucho is famous for its ceramics
for the Guerrilla Fighters sendero luminoso..
and the battle of Ayacucho. that was the last battle fought to free south
america from the spanish reign.
there are minor Inca ruins near Ayacucho.

| | Guest | Lima-Ayacucho-Abancay-Lima + Tingo Maria Its a very nice part of Peru. It takes about 1 day to Huancayo (7/8
hours)town itself not very interesting, nice villages in the area, 1 day
to Ayacucho (12 hours- dry seaon, took me 18 hours in Feb) Ayacucho is a
nice town, 1 day to Andahuaylas (10 hours-took me 20 during wet season),
1 day to Abancay (6 hours) and half a day to Cuzco (5 hours)
Of course it can be done faster by combining day and nightbuses (but
then you dont see anything of course or going via the desert (e.g. 18
hours Lima- Cuzco via Nazca & Abancay (read that they finished the roads
and bridge improvemnets between Abancay and Cuzco). Try to sit on the
left side between Andahuaylas and Cuzco, you see the Cordillera on the
left (sometimes).
Daily flights between Lima- Ayacucho- Lima. Small airstrip near
Andayhualas, with infrequent flights.
have fun
