| | Guest | rental car in patagonia we will rent a car in ushuaia and then drive to all the "typical"
spots: punta arenas, puerto natales, torres del paine, el calafate,
los glaciares, el chaiten, mte. fitz roy, to rn 40 up to rn 26 to
petrified forest to comodoro rivadavia, north on rn 3 to peninsula
valdes, return the vehicle in trelew.
what kind of vehicle do we need for this trip? can we do it with a
simple small car or do we need something that has just a bit more
ground clearance, such as a pick-up truck, or do we even need 4-x4???
looking forward to getting some input on this.

I drove El Calafate to El Chalten and back, as well as from Trelew to
Punto Tomba, to and around Valdes. It can be done in a small
low-clearance car (we had Fiat Puntos) but a high clearance vehicle
would be nice because of the gravel (it tends to grab wheels and makes
for a tiring drive).
I think a pick up would be the best bet. You don't really need 4WD.

| | Guest | rental car in patagonia I'm affraid it will not be easy to cross the border to Chile with a car
hired in Ushuaia. We therefore will take the overland bus tecniviajes@speedy.com.ar from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas and hire a car there.
A pick-up double cabin worked out to be a good solution in all those
regions.
