It seems most carriers stop at Sao Paulo first before Rio.
Continental offers flights to Rio from New York (EWR). I believe it
stops at Sao Paulo first. Varig does too, from JFK.
Last Christmas, AA had a fare sale for $279 from NY to Rio. Although
with taxes it came to $400 and change, we grabbed it. We could'nt get
ones from either Newark of JFK (Don't even remember if AA services EWR
to Rio), ended up flying from Phila. to Rio, via Miami and Sao Paulo.
If AA do it again this year, we're going. The five of us spent $100
each to get a five year tourist Visa from the Brazilian consulate in
Manhattan. We are not going to use it just once.
