I think you are planning too far ahead of time. I'd do it in
November. Christmas is a low season in Brazil. There will be
bargains from major carriers. Last Christmas we flew to Rio from NY
for $297 per person. Although with taxes it comes to $400 and change
per person. I can't complain about that fare.

Exactly how do you support this statement? Christmas is perhaps only
second to Carnival as far as high-season travel goes in Brazil...
Flights and hotels will generally be much more expensive than in the
shoulder season of oct/nov or jan/feb.

How? The fact we paid $400 and change for each five of us in the
family travelling from NY to Rio tells me that.

Are you telling me I should plan my next trip in October/November?

That depends on whether you want to avoid the crowds or not... New
Year's Eve in Copacabana sure is a nice experience, but expect to be
paying at least twice as much for hotels (in & around Rio) in the
period between around 24 Dec / 02 Jan. After that I agree things calm
down quite a bit, but if you actually found a good deal on airfares
and hotel, by all means go for it.

It's just that as a Brazilian living in Europe for more than 10 years,
I know that if I want to get reasonable fares to Brazil around Xmas I
have to book between 12-10 months in advance as a great proportion of
Brazilians living abroad like to spend their holidays at home with
their families and friends.

Just imagine you booked your travel 10-12 months before 9-11. Then
the twin tower collapsed. No one is travelling despite the airlines
are having fire sales just to avoid going under. You are stuck with
high priced ticket (relatively speaking) going home to Brazil but
everyone else can get it for 60 to 70% of what you paid. I wouldn't
like that at all.

I have never booked a flight a year ahead of time. Probably never
will.

I agree. I tend to get the best deals 2-4 weeks prior to actual
travel.

Default Rio air fares

Korean Air used to fly non-stop from LAX to Sao Paulo with fares as low as
US$480 RT/Non-Stop from Los Angeles. I flew three times on KA between 1998
and 2000. Sweet deal. Alas, Korean Air no longer
flies to Sao Paulo as of 2001. Finding a non-stop flight that cheap to
Brazil out of Los Angeles is pretty much unheard of nowadays. It was sweet
while it lasted.
