Good question! What I do is let them know that I'm just looking for a
minute and I'll get food from the person that is in my face the least.
Always polite, however, and never promise to be back if you don't mean
it. They will say you promised to buy from them, but be firm and
tell them you don't promise to buy from anyone unless you put money in
their hand.
I respect them a lot, and let them know it, since they're trying to eke
out a living in a country that hasn't done them any favors. The All
Inclusives have done a lot to keep the tourist dollar out of the hands
of the general populace. I agree that the Sandals type places hire
locals to work there, but the wages are unbelievably low, and the
demands are high.
Talk to the locals and let them know you're interested in their country
and their lives. Treat them with respect, and it comes right back at
you.
