Default Publicos to Fajardo

My wife & I are taking a cruise on the Royal Caribbean AOS on July 2 and
thinking of flying into San Juan either the prior Wednesday night or
Thursday morning. Thought was to get a lift to Fajardo and then take the
ferry to Culebra. I understand that for about $3.00 you can get a Publico
out of Rio Piedras and the trip, while a little long, can be a lot of fun ..
Sounds neat, but I want to be realistic -- we are both in our early 60's and
speak no Spanish -- is this plan stupid / risky or might this be a fun way
to see the counrty-side and meet local people???
I assume we would stay in a hotel/Inn at Fajardo one night and catch the
ferry the next morning -- any thoughts would be appreciated

The highway from San Juan to Fajardo can be pretty crowded. 2 hours if
the going is pretty good, 3 hours if there is traffic.
The ferry is one and a half hours and it can be difficult to get a
ticket even when it's running as scheduled ( around 9am and 3pm weekdays
from Fajardo ). It's not what I would call "relaxing", but YMMV!

We flew Isla Nena from San Juan to Culebra via Fajardo. About $70 one
way. We stopped and picked up some local passengers in Fajardo on the
way, about $25 from there. We were advised by our rental agent that the
ferry can be a hit or miss deal - don't be on a time schedule and
definitely call ahead for the current schedule. For our 5 night stay on
the island the trip was worth it, personally I wouldn't find getting
there worth it for just an overnight trip.

Carry the local airline numbers with you, just in case the ferry doesn't
run as scheduled or you can't get a ticket. It's 4th of July weekend
and you want to be sure to make it back for your cruise. Also -
luggage? I think the local plane had a 50-60 lb. limit per passenger if
you should go that route.

Have a great cruise and enjoy your trip!
