Default passport req'd for St.Bart's?

hope someone can help me out here. going on a cruise to St. John, St.
Bart's, Virgin Gorda, etc. I checked the US govt site & it says that
passports aren't req'd for caribbean until jan. 2007, but the St. Bart's
site says that a passport is req'd effective july 2005. should i get a
passport? or is one not needed since i'm only spending the day there while
on a cruise? we also are docking at St. Martin for a day, so would probably
be the same deal there. any help would be so appreciated!!

I would recommend getting a passport. They're good for
10 years and open a world of possibilities for you. You
never know when you will get an opportunity for last
minute travel that will require a passport.

Yeah, I really find it hard to understand the american attitude to
passports. If you travel to another country, you need a passport.
(There are exceptions, but they are becoming fewer and fewer, and
largely on america's decision.. It's not the other countries which
will stop you coming in, it's the potential difficulty of re-entering
america which you should worry about. If you haven't travelled
abroad before, you should know that for people who aren't american,
it can be impossible for them to come in, even for a visit. This is
especially the case for caribbeans, who in the majority will be
denied visas. I can certainly say that if I was black or hispanic,
I wouldn't risk the potential hassle; immigration authorities can
be less than welcoming at the best of times.

HI Kathy,

Congrats on applying for the passport. Glad you have done that.

Just because the US doesn't require that you have one, doesn't mean any
country that you are going to doesn't need one. While a passport is really
used as your form of ID when entering back into the US. Other countries
either require, or don't require, you to have one.

Many more Caribbean Islands are requiring you to have a passport long before
the US Government requires it. Trinidad and Tobago has required US Citizens
have a passport for a long time. Barbados started requiring it about 2
years ago and then you have the French and Dutch Islands who have a mind all
their own.

Enjoy your trip.
