Default best snorkeling ? Cozumel Alternatives...

With Cozumel hit by recent hurricanes, reports of the damage to the reef
seem to indicate
it would be better to go some where else for snorkeling. Could any one
recommend
alternatives to Cozumel for snorkeling ? Thank you for your help.

Belize. Numerous spots for great snorkeling: Placencia, Silk Cayes,
Caye Caulker, even Ambergris.

Just got back from Belize. I'd say that the snorkelling there was even
better than the diving.

Snorkeling in akumal, mexico is great. There is a reef surrounding the
akumal bay which is swimming distance from the beach. Turtles come to
hatch in akumal and you can see them swimming near the reef. You can
also see squid, octopi, rays, flounder and all the typical colored
fish that you can imagine. There is also a resident barracuda that the
locals have named Barry. It is about four feet and people are surprised
by it stareing staright at you and floating. There is a school of fish,
thousands of them, that swim the bay followed by a barracuda. It is an
awsome sight. You see the barracuda and the fish right next to it
huddling. when the baracuda swims through the huddle they form a
doughnut. The residents told me that when the barracuda gives chase,
they go back and forth accross the bay zooming by really fast.

If you want info about akumal, check out locogringo.com. There is lots
of info about the area and a forum with posters that swear by it in
terms of diving and snorkeling.

Andres
