Hmmm, well, first the bad news: You aren't going to see much of Mexico.
Cancun is a fairly new city built for tourism. It's full of thousands of
people doing the same thing you're doing. Most of them don't venture far
from their all inclusive resort. Their vacation is mostly about hanging out
on the beach and relaxing in a very comfortable climate. Probably the most
popular activity is consuming alcohol. With your time frame you aren't going
to have time to see much of Mexico even if you do get away from the resort.
The good news: Cancun is very close to Mexico. You won't have to go
very far to see it. You've told us what doesn't interest you and eliminated
what I think is one of the best reasons for going to that part of the
world--diving and snorkeling. So what do you like? There are several other
forms of tourism available in that area. Sight seeing? There are a number of
excellent Mayan ruins in the area. Cultural tourism? Seeing the people of
the region and how they live. Shopping? The region is poor in natural
resources and most things are shipped in, so real bargains are few and far
between, but there are some interesting possibilities. Birding and seeing
some of the other wildlife of the tropics? I have a few suggestions in that
area as well. So tell us what you *are* interested in and we can give you
some suggestions. Since you're traveling with a healthy budget I'd suggest
that you rent a car and get out of Cancun for at least one day. Once we know
what you're interested in we can suggest a direction and some possible
places to go.
