Playa del Carmen or Tulum. Have you considered Ambergris Caye, Belize? It
doesn't have great swimming right right off the beaches, but the water is a
beautiful multitude of blue and turquoise colors. San Pedro is a very fun
place with lots of night life and it's very easy to visit.

Yes.

It all depends on what you're after and what's important to you. There are
many resort on the left and right coast of Mexico that provide the beautiful
beaches and fun nightlife in both the left and right coast of Mexico. My
only objection to some of these places is that you don't really get a flavor
for the local lifestyle. Take Cancun, for example. You can go there and just
stay in the so-called hotel zone, or Zona Hotelera, and you won't even feel
like you're in Mexico. Everyone speaks English, the almighty dollar is
accepted and you have your usual MickeyDs, KFC and Burger King. Why travel
so far when you might as well be in Miami Beach or Newport Beach. I prefer
less touristy destination, touristy being a relative term. I am partial, for
example, to Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca. Just enough tourism, no more no
less. Or someplace like Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. I was going to say Acapulco but
it's just like any other big city though you will definitely get to mix with
the locals.
