I'd recommend Jamaica for a number of reasons. First, it's relatively large
for a Caribbean island, some 135 miles long and 50 miles wide. Second, it
has the tallest mountains in the Caribbean... these factors mean you can
enjoy a lush, rainforest type environment on the extreme east end to an arid
environment on the west end. The mountains are amazing, with wild flowers
that are stunning. Regardless of popular opinion, the people are great,
particularly when you get out of Mobay, Ocho Rios or Kingston.
Additionally, there are historic villas like Fire Fly in Port Maria (where
Noel Coward lived, and possessing the most beautiful view I've ever seen in
the Caribbean), great waterfalls, orchid plantations and splendid beaches
( a 7 mile long white sand beach in Negril). One of the best things to do is
go to a local farmer's market on Market Day... a real feast for the senses.
The food and drink are great, with varied and interesting cuisine. And,
relatively speaking, everything is cheap, Jamaica is perhaps the most
inexpensive place we've stayed in the tropics (excepting possibly the DR).

We've been to the island about 12 times and we find new and exciting things
every time.

Where ever you go, I'd strongly advise against an all inclusive. Once
you've paid for everything it's sometimes difficult to leave the resort and
experience the real country (which is much different than the little enclave
you experience in the resort)... and after all, isn't that why you travel to
a different culture? For the same reasons, I'm not a cruise fan. I've seen
to many places, from Tobago to Jamaica to Cozumel to Curacao, to Cabo where
the boat people flock ashore, are mobbed by vendors and herded to the local
attractions and then trucked back to the boat... all without really getting
into the local scene.

>> if you had only one week where in the caribbean would you go.

**I** would go back to the Virgin Islands. I know I like it there,
and things are close enough together that you can see and do stuff
without having to travel a long distance and I just like it and long
to go back.

If you are asking where one should go in the Caribbean if they only
have one week for the rest of their life to experience the Caribbean,
my answer would depend a bit on what the person was like and what they
wanted.

I would NOT take a cruise though. I would rather go to one place that
I turned out not to like too well than to have to go through the
hassle of getting off the ship and fighting through the vendors, and
then worry about getting back to the ship in time so that I wouldn't
be left. I don't think I could get the real flavor of a place in that
short a time with 2000 of my closest friends doing the same thing at
the same time.

Plus it would be really frustrating to find a place I liked and know I
had to leave right away. I know lots of folks love to cruise. I'm
just not one of them. I really only liked the ship when everyone else
was too seasick to be eating, or when I could use it as kind of a
moveable hotel room so that I could get off and go somewhere that all
the other people on the cruise didn't know about and didn't go there.

I second that. It all depends what your expectations are.

It also depends on what your budget is, where you are coming
from, what your travel style is, and what time of year you're
going.

If you're only going for a week, you probably don't want to
waste a lot of time on connections.

Do you like snorkelling/diving? Are you willing to experience
the world outside the Namerican style (i.e. some insects, things
that seem "dirty" compared to the usual, etc..) Do you mind
an island with another language? Do you want sun or mind a
bit of rain? Do you like beaches over jungle? Do you want
activities? What's your budget?

You might be better going to a small island where you can see a
wider spectrum of the island in a week, maybe something like BVI.
Something a bit more exclusive, maybe Nevis. Don't care about
beaches, then Dominica. Eager diver, then Curacao or Bonaire,
or maybe Saba. Beaches only, then maybe something like Anguilla
(though I have never been there).

But then again, like I said if you want to avoid a big overhead
in travelling you'll want to avoid connections as much as
possible and so maybe St.Martin would be better, though much
more developed than might fit your mind's eye.

Give us some details.

Well I live in Barbados.. but I wouldn't recommend here.. ok maybe I would
but only if you wanted to have a vacation that keeps you busy, and be in
more of the 1st world Caribbean..

IF I had only a week.. and I wanted totally relaxation.. I'd go to Bequia.
Stay at a place on Lower Bay.. and just veg for a week..

If I wanted to experience as much as possible.. I would take a port
intensive cruise. Something that would hit the highlights.. so I can
decide to maybe go back later..

That's what I would do.
