Default Spices In Jamaica??

Hello all,
Dumb question: I'll be visiting Jamaica shortly from the US. An
acquaintance who was there a couple of years ago asserts that spices such
as peppercorns, cummin, oregano, etc., are especially hard to come by for
most Jamaicans.
This sounds 'way out to me- any truth to this? Would spices be an
appropriate item to take for gifts and/or bartering??

TIA!!

Cap'n John

Dear Cap'n John,

Spices are easy to obtain in Jamaica. There's a wide variety.

Cummin is available in most markets, since Jamaicans cook curry
regularly.

Many spices grow naturally in Jamaica, including allspice, locally
called pimento.

No need to bring spices to Jamaica.
Enjoy your visit. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks everyone!
The assertion did not make much sense to me either, which is why I
posted the question.

Regards to all,

Cap'n (9 sleeps!)John
