Default First time to Jamaica

Booked at Coco La Palm resort in Negril, late February.
This is not an all inclusive resort any first hand knowledge of this resort
on this forum
What are some of the better restaurants in that area..........
I have heard that Dunns Falls is in some bad shape is that true? Is this a
"must see" for Jamaica?
What else would be considered a "must see" and we will not have a car but
will travel by taxi.
TIA

You will like Coco La Palm. Remember that Jamaica is a poor country,
and that it will be more of a laid back experience than a five star
hotel in Paris. It is a much more relaxed vacation, and the location of
Coco is great.

Walk to the beach and turn left. Walk about a half mile, and find
Alfred's Ocean Palace. Great for reggae on the beach, and a good bar,
decent restaurant. Walk farther, and you'll find picnic tables on the
beach. The first of these is Mavis' and Son's. Good food well prepared
and you eat on the beach by candlelight, with the caribbean ocean coming
up to and under your table. Next to Mavis' is Pete's. That was the
first place I dined at almost 20 years ago in Negril. Pete died two
years ago, but the family has kept it up. Excellent curried conch, and
other stuff is good. In the little alley behind Mavis' is the Uprising
Bar and Café. This is also known as One Mile. Mostly for the locals,
but EXCELLENT food, and very inexpensive. Tell Jean and Tina that Dave
(the teacher) from Vermont says hi.

Going the other way toward the all-inclusives is Rainbow Arch. Eating
there takes time, since everything is prepared after you order it. Have
a couple of Red Stripes and relax. A little farther is the bar at
Firefly. Good vibes and great drinks and low prices. Firefly is where
we choose to stay.

Don't be afraid to walk anywhere around Negril. Its fine. Take a cab
up the west end road and on the cliffs and dine at Chicken Lavish.
You'll really like that place. Hang out with some of the locals, and
check out the dominoes game always taking place there.

YS Falls is nice, very scenic. I prefer Mayfield Falls, a good trip up
into the mountains, and it will give you an entirely different
perspective of Jamaica. Good people and great ambience. Stop by Rasta
Bob's little fruit stand and get good fruits and veggies at a low price.
He looks a tad scary, but has a heart of gold. Last time we were there
he was roasting breadfruit over a small fire, and frying saltfish on the
side. He protested that we had paid him too much for what we took, and
insisted on sharing more things, like jelly coconuts and tamarinds and
soursops.

The walk up Mayfield Falls is relaxing and healing. The waters are from
a mineral spring, and are cool and refreshing. Wear water shoes. And
be careful not to stub your toes too much on the rocks. Mayfield is not
as steep and wide and dramatic as is Dunn's, but it is closer and more
intimate. Highly recommended!

Enjoy your trip, and you will be glad that you didn't stay at an all-
inclusive!
