As the other poster has said, it is safe. There are a lot of police
on the streets, and they won't tolerate violence against tourists.
As usual take sensible precautions, leave flash jewelery at home
and carry the money you need. In dark back corners it's possible
you'll run into pickpocket children as in most developing countries.
We paid, I think, around the $100 a night mark a few years ago
for a hotel in Habana Viejo. It's the best place to stay by far
(in my opinion), though you have to realise they are hotels which
had their hay-day in the 20's and 30's and so don't expect it to
be a modern american hotel. We stayed at the hotel Sevilla and
really enjoyed it. Get a room off the Paseo if you stay there
(noise at night) and definitely get out in the evening and walk
the Paseo and the Malecon, and visit some of the live music bars.
It's well worth visiting the countryside too, at which I'd recommend
staying in private B&B. You will likely find the B&B in Havana
itself to be much more 'basic' than those in the countryside towns
or cities. Trinidad in particular is a very picturesque place
and has splendid casas particulares. You would need to be able
to get by with some spanish outside Havana.
In Havana, eat in the private restaurants. Everyone and his dog
will know of 'the best one' and will take you there. (They get
a commission from the owner). I think they run about $10 a
person.
Have fun!
