Default Winging it in Jamaica

I can get a roundtrip ticket for 14 days to Jamaica for $250. I've been
there many times and have always stayed at an all inclusive to mainly avoid
hidden expenses. Has anyone had experience with going down there with no
hotel reservations and winging it.

I have done this many times. I love this way of going to JA. You have better
chances if off season however if you want more hotels to choose from. I
always tell them at the airport that I will be staying Dr.'s Cave Beach
Hotel as they will ask you for an address. I then go there to get a drink
and see if they have any room. They have always had one. Then I get a taxi
and ride around looking for another and so on. Now that my wife is a bit
older and rather not I only do it when I am alone. You may be surprised how
many hotels will 'find room' for someone with money.

Yes, I did it, but in the off season (September). I recommend that you
bring a couple of "off-the-beaten-track" guidebooks with you. Make sure
they have detailed listings of small inns, hotels and B&B's. I recommend
staying away from the big resort areas as an independent traveller. These
areas draw in a lot of people desperate to make a living by hassling you.
You get hassled so much that it's just plain unpleasant. When you get away
from those areas, you get to the "real Jamaica" where people are friendly,
prices are cheap, and nobody has any particular interest in hussling you.

I'm trying to figure if the extra hassle will be worth it in terms of
potential money savings. I can probably find an all inclusive for 8-900 per
person. If I end up going through a lot of hassle to stay in dumps and
spending the same amount of money, it would be kind of stupid.

I've been to Jamaica enough times to know that everything is negotiable. I'm
trying to gauge the hassle factor of trying to find reasonable places to
stay, eat, etc.

Buy the Lonely Planet guide to Jamaica. It lists phone numbers so that you
can call innkeepers directly and inquire about the availability of lodging.
The book will provide you with insight which will allow you to travel with
confidence. It will pay for itself by the end of your first day in Jamaica.

I'm guessing by your email address that you are from Kansas City. We have
two travel companies here in Milwaukee that fly charters to Montego Bay. If
you go last minute they have some good pricing. I'm sure if you are an
experienced traveller you have checked these options in your area. The two
that service us are Apple Vacations and Funjet. I don't think either are in
your area. The only other with any potentially good rates is probably Air
Jamaica. Hope this helps.

Huh? Are you suggesting it doesn't rain much in Jamaica?
