Default best place for family in Jamaica or Bahamas?

HI - we are thinking about going to Jamaica or Bahamas for a week this
summer
with our 13, 10 and 3 1/2 yr. old. Any suggestions on reasonably
priced all
inclusives or not (I don't mind cooking on vacation - believe it or
not) would be greatly appreciated. We are looking for a newer place,
with a suite or condo that could accomodate all 5 of us comfortably.

Thank you in advance. T. Riddell

You might want to consider a private villa, they are typically less
expensive than a resort and you get a whole lot more...many with private
pools and staff. Check out some of the internet sites, there's scads. I
would not take children to Jamaica, in fact I wouldn't recommend adults go
there unless you like heavy security and/or are happy with staying within
your confines....bad crime. Bahamas would be better, Nassau and Freeport
are the tourist centers however the out islands such as Eleuthra, Abaco, etc
are much more quiet and laid back.

I can't disagree with you more. I have been traveling to JA for decades and
have learned not to travel looking like a tourist anywhere in the world if
you are American. Especially within the boundaries of USA. Dress right and
you blend in and have way more fun. Dress like a fool and you will be taken
every time.

That goes without saying. However, it does not escape the fact that Jamaica
has one of the highest crime rates in the Caribbean and not just petty theft
there's violent crime. Why would you subject your children to that
possibility when there are safer and better places to travel?

OK, I see your point. I feel 100% safe walking the streets of Jamaica. We
have a low crime rate here at home so where ever I go I would be increasing
the chances of becoming a victim of any random act. These high crime rates
are well within the inner city I avoid the inner city here at home. The
tourist spots have become safer in the times when JA need tourist to help to
survive. I have seen soldiers on the streets in Mo Bay. This is a sign of
Police Presents and makes me feel safer than when I would go to Down Town
Boston. I have been to other parts of the Caribbean and have been returning
to Jamaica in three decades now.
