| | Guest | Dominican Republic A group of us is going to Santo Domingo in February for thre Serie del
Caribe (Caribbean World Series). It's our first visit to the
Dominican Republic. Can we expect a lot of rain that time of year? Can
we rely on public transportation, or should be plan on renting a car
to get around? (we'll be there a week). Are there any must-sees,
must-dos, must-avoids?

| | Guest | Dominican Republic It is just a suggestion but I will try to hire someone with a car to drive
and be a tour guide.
The drivers do not follow any rules and I know a lot of them we do not even
have license.

I have a chance of a week in January at a timeshare near Santo Domingo
at Acuarium Suite Resort which is described as located in a
non-touristic area near Santo Domingo. I know it is supposed to be a
beautiful if poor island.
I have three concerns:
1) I'm a bit put off by the reported high crime rate. How bad is this
really?
2) I think we'll have difficulty getting around without a car, but I
find reports poorly maintained and marked roads a little worrying, but
more I find the idea of policemen who stop you and want a bribe also a
bit off-putting.
3) We speak very little Spanish, although we've traveled in a number
of Spanish speaking countries (Spain, Costa Rica, Mexico and
Guatemala). But those places have a lot of tourism infrastructure
where the people speak at least some English. Will this be a problem?

| | Guest | Dominican Republic I have to be honest this is not my favorite destination and would never
visit as a sole destination. A few years back we took a cruise there
which stopped in other ports as well. I felt must more secure when
visiting the Dominican Republic by cruise ship and taking the Cruise
lines shore excursions. The one thing I remember though is pulling into
the port and seeing men with machine guns standing around the perimiter
of the beach. Needless to say, we did our shore excursion and went
right back on the cruiseship.
