| | Guest | What's happening to Negril-JA ? In the past I used to visit Negril often and enjoy its local charm, the
town; almost any day of a week I could find good a reggae show by a good
named artist to cap off the day. Unfortunately recently the place seem
to be loosing its charm, it is becoming more touristic in a bad way (new
Burger King in the middle, less and less ackee due to over-harvesting),
more crime (though we managed to get away safely, last week two knife
wielding people attempted to rob us right in front of Negril-Inn and
Roots-Bambo, on the famous Negril beach). Not counting cheesy hotel
shows for tourist, the last week was the first whole week I spend in
Negril without any good reggae shows to attend, except the Culture show
on Monday (but unfortunately I could not make it to that show, on the
way I had to turn back to my hotel after that robbery attempt I
mentioned above). I feel sad to give such a negative report to Negril
this time, because I know there are many good conscious Rasta's who are
trying to make a living there).

When was the last time you visited? Must be a sigh of the times. Maybe the
economy in the US is reflecting. I remember when Jamaica belonged more to
the Jamaicans and less to the travel industry and the AIs.

While I'm sorry for the original poster's misfortune, Negril is
hardly the only place in the Caribbean where creeping commercialism
and corporatism (as evidenced by the Burger King) is an issue. In
that respect, there are actually "two" Negrils--the seven mile beach
area, which still has its share of smaller hotels but is also
AI-oriented--and the cliffs, a funkier and more "local" area that is
probably where I would go if the overly commercial aspects of the
beach area bothered me. FWIW, I've never found reggae shows at clubs
(the kind advertised on the colorful blackboards) to be a fixture in
Negril in any given week, and feel that it should be pointed out that
many, many thousands of people visit the area seasonally without
encountering any difficulties at all. | |

Nope I disagree, if anything the reggae shows the kind advertised on the
colorful blackboards (by chalk) has always been a fixture of Negril! (I
have been a regular visitor of Negil for 17 years), it is this colorful
aspect which I worry Negril has been loosing (I think it is due to
overscheduling free mediocre shows, drinking limbo contest etc on the
seven mile beach for tourist, during the same nights the major good
shows and cultural events by named artist were going on).
