Looking for SUGGESTIONS :-) Unique Caribbean Honeymoon In 1995 I had the Caribbean trip of a lifetime. I first bought a roundtrip
ticket to Grenada and a LIAT mini explorer pass which allowed me to fly to
three different islands.
I started with a week in Grenada, followed by Carnival in Trinidad. On Ash
Wednesday I took the morning ferry to Tobago for a few days where I enjoyed
relaxing on the beach and hiking. I took the overnight ferry back to Port of
Spain with a few hours to spare before the next leg of my trip.
From Trinidad I flew to Bequia (pop. 5,000) with brief stops in Grenada,
Carriacou, Union Island and Palm Island along the way. I spent a week in
Bequia walking almost the entire island and visiting several interesting
beaches. Each night there was live entertainment on a different part of the
island. The locals were very friendly as everyone seemed to take pride in
being born on Bequia.
Next I was scheduled to fly to Montserrat, however the plane was unable to
land due to high winds. Instead I spent the night in Antigua
where I ventured out for dinner and met several locals with whom I traded
reggae tapes for food, beer and crafts.
The following morning I flew over to Montserrat which I found to be
absolutely beautiful. One day I hiked from sea level to the top of Chances
Peak which offered views of several nearby islands as well as the 'hidden
valley' below. A couple days later it happened to be St. Patrick's Day, a
national holiday which was celebrated in the Parish of St. Patrick. Again I
met plenty of friendly locals as I joined in the festivities. The volcano
erupted just 2 months later, so I consider
myself very fortunate to have visited Montserrat when I did.
My last few days were spent in Grenada, where I took the time to get to know
several locals. My interest in music gave me instant rapport with people and
generally speaking people were very appreciative of my interest in Caribbean
culture. My last full day in Grenada was spent learning how to play cricket
with tour guides and taxi drivers who had the day off since there weren't
any cruise ships docked in St Georges.
Enough about my trip...here's a suggestion: buy the Lonely Planet guide to
the Eastern Caribbean and pick a few islands. Based upon your particular
interests, you are sure to find a couple that will be most appealing to you.
