Playa del Carmen

Greetings. I am trying to plan a trip to Mexican Rivera during February
2004. Playa del Carmen is looking pretty good. Any recommendations on
beach front resort or hotel would be greatly appreciated. What do you think
of "Gran Porto Real Resort & Spa"?

I would recommend the Continental Plaza Playacar if only because of its
location. It's literally a stone's throw away from the ferry station to
Cozumel and just a hundred yards from Fifth Avenue, the main drag in Playa.
The Continental Plaza was one of the first hotels built in Playa and though
it may be getting old in the tooth, it's still a great hotel. It offers
all-inclusive and European plans. Personally, I would *not* go for the
all-inclusive since the hotel is so close to all the restaurants on Fifth
Avenue.

Looks intriguing. Took me a while to find a website with pics, but it looks
charming.

We may be going to Playa Del Carmen for very short trip (2 days), and were
hoping to stay at someplace smaller and more unique than where the wedding
we're going to will be (Gran Porto Real). The rate we could get for a
Standard Rate Ocean View is $ 140 on Expedia. Could a travel agent get us a
better deal (with air?) We're not very seasoned as far as air travel and
packages go. How's the restaurant?

Any other place you all could recommend in between Cancun and Playa del
Carmen that fits the bill? We'd spend more if we were going to be there
longer, but this is such a quickie trip that we don't need all the frou-frou
of a huge resort.
