From Ambergris you can do day trips to the Lamanai and the Altun Ha Maya
sites. Both are day long trips which give you plenty of time at the sites.
I personally recommend using Tanisha tours w/Daniel Nunez. Great guide,
with lots of local knowledge. Additionally, both trips include a river tour
with lots of opportunities to see the local flora and fauna. I've always
really enjoyed Ambergris Caye, neighboring Caye Caulker is great too
(cheaper, more of a backpacker destination). On our last trip we stayed a
bit north of San Pedro, rented bikes, and went into town whenever we wanted.
Not really much snorkeling from the beach, but 1/2 day trips were easy to
find and relatively cheap. We also have spent time in the Palencia area,
and inland in San Ignacio. I personally like staying on the islands because
another great thing in Belize is the fantastic fishing, which I like to take
advantage of whenever I make it down there.

"Do not believe in what you have heard; do not believe in traditions because
they have been
handed down for many generations; do not believe anything because it is
rumored and spoken
of by many; do not believe merely because the written statement of some old
sage is produced;
do not believe in conjectures; do not believe merely in the authority of
your teachers and elders.
After observation and analysis, when it agrees with reason and is conducive
to the good and
benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."
