God bless America! I think he should sue for at least 3 billion
dollars.

I've flown USAir many times and find this airline about the same as any of the
others. No better, no worse.

wrong bevis, it is all about personal responsibility, you failed to
have with you the required documents and you are blaming the airline
which is just doing it's duty to follow the law. Next time when you're
in the wrong try acting a bit more contrite, it might get people who
can assist you to assist you.

you have swallowed hook line and sinker political 'talking points' that
have little basis in reality -- sure there is frivilous and abusive
litigation -- but the biggest abusers are powerful corporations not joe
schmoo from the airline counter or with the fried rat in his chicken box

Can we now drop this subject ? - it is heading into the personal area. We
have all got this story and made observations from it.

cheers, philip

Even if one takes his story at face value, that's about his
only valid point. Virtually every single other
action he took was about as boneheaded as he could have chosen.
Why he didn't call USAir back from the airport is beyond me. That's
where he started, it's where he had his most success to that point.
I guess I'm also surprised that it didn't even occur to him
that maybe he should check out the status of his return tickets
either. Even beyond that, I probably would have waited for
the travel agency to open before booking such new and expensive
tickets. And alot of agencies do have emergency service numbers,
although I've never really used one.

I went through a similar experience with having left important
documentation at home. The round trip to retrieve it was in
excess of the time left to make the plane. Before I left
the airport, I had rescheduled everything. It wasn't a single
gate agent that did this for me. The original reacted much in
the same way the USAir agent in the story did. (Maybe a tad
bit less surly). Between the 800 number and a customer service
desk, I sorted out the mess and rebooked everything.

I've been travelling to Canada regularly for twenty years, at least,
and I have always taken my passport. While not strictly required it
is always accepted, and has never raised any suspicions.

Well, by air I wouldn't be surprised. I was thinking more of
by auto. I'm not sure I'd ever shown a passport when crossing
by car, even when I happened to have it with me.
