I've never had a Bahamian not accept US $$. There's no reason for
them to give you anything but Bahamian money in change. They are
doing you a favor by accepting foreign currency. I have not however
been very far into the Exumas or to the Abacos or Andros or Eleuthra.

In some places (Frazier's Hog Cay) they only accept cash (either US$
or Bahamian$) - no travelers checks, no checks, no credit cards. On
Highbourne Cay they prefer personal checks to credit cards. Some
places will accept credit cards but will charge a surcharge. That's
perfectly legal outside the US. Some credit cards will also charge an
extra fee because it is a non US$ currency even though it is on par
with the US$. It's three or four percent for no good reason.

Long, long, long, long ago (at least as far back as the 1950s) the Bahamas
still used pounds, shillings, pence.

I understood that another piece of paper money had very wide Bahamas
circulation - the "seven shilling note". It had a picture of Geo Washington
on it with a "1" in each corner.

Take $$ US, exchange rate is the same, and it is accepted everywhere. Keep
denominations small...lots of 20's, 10's, fins and sawbucks. Although bulky, it
is easier to pay exact price and avoid the accumulation of BSDs you'll have to
exchange later. Good advice anywhere. And when haggling at marts or stalls, its
often best to have your ones on the outside of your wad...often changing a
twenty or fifty is difficult, and not good strategy for negotiation.
