Default Canada Trip in June

Have just booked flights to get to us Calgary the second week in June,
flying back from Vancouver two weeks later. We live in the UK
Not been to Canada before ( really excited!) but our normal modus operandi
in the US is to book a flight and a car and a hotel/motel for the first
night and then set off with a very loosely planned itinerary, stopping
where we feel like it for a couple of days at a time and finding a motel
wherever we happen to be. Not had any problems doing that in the US but am
unsure if this will be as practical in Canada.
We usually have a rough idea of what we want to see, in this case its
still at the thinking about stage, but includes driving through from Banff
up to Jasper, via Lake Louise. Not sure after that, but want to spend a
few days in the Vancouver area before returning.
Hotel/motel prices seem to be higher than in the US, but we can live with
that. Our usual requirements are a clean bed and bathroom , not really
bothered about fancy facilities as we only want it as a place to sleep, so
much we want to see it would be a waste to spend any time in an hotel.
Any hints/ tips would be very much appreciated :-)
thanks

Generally you can do the same in Canada. However, Banff and Jasper may
be difficult as you're into tourist season. Try to book there but once
you're on the road, just don't leave it until late in the day.

Remember prices are in Canadian dollars. Also a lot of smaller motels
are not on the internet and these are reasonable and normally clean.

Makes sense, we usually try to be on the road early and rarely drive after
noon. That is when we look round wherever we are, have a spot of lunch and
then go sort out some accommodation for the night.

Yes, I know, but compared to places we have been before they are more
expensive.

Yes, maybe we will look and perhaps boook somewhere in the Banff/ Jasper
area and then just take pot luck for the rest of the trip. I really don't
like holidays that are too 'planned' , my life runs to a clock most of the
time so my holidays are precious times where I can please myself :-)

Default Canada Trip in June

the town before Banff is called Canmore. It is much more reasonably priced
to stay and just as, if not more beautiful than Banff. Stay at the Drake,
it is the best priced hotel for the area.

Lake Louise is pricey and there isn't much choice of places to stay. Not
sure about Jasper, so you might be paying lots. Personally I have pulled out
my sleeping bag and slept under the stars and by a fire in quite a few
campgrounds. Just make sure you put all food and garbage away before
bedtime.

Revelstoke is a skiing town, so the prices might be ok in the summer. (not
sure)

The good thing about BC is that you can go up deserted road and sleep there.
I have gone into campgrounds but found the nicest spots just off the main
roads.

vancouver is pricey to stay. There is a Sandman Hotel, much like a holiday
inn, but for 30 bucks more you can stay in the hotel Georgia, which is
fabulous. I would think you would want to call ahead for reservations.
Just to make sure.

Stop at the tourist information places along the way.

Enjoy! if you have any questions, feel free to email me at trishica@shaw.ca
