| | Guest | CANADA IN 4 WEEKS ??? Hey All,
My wife, daughter and I are planing to spend our summer vaication in
your
beautifull country. We live in Denmark and we are planing to go for 4-6
weeks proberly around july, and before you say anything i do realize
that
this is not a longtime for such a large country.
This i why im writing here, to get some opinions about what to
concentrate
on. We 30,34 and our daughter will be only 1 year old at this time. So
we
plan to
rent an autocamper and drive around. and these are some of our
questions-
What are top 10 places we can not miss ?
Should we go to the east, the west or both(maybe 2 week on either side)
?
Good places to stay ?
Indian sites ?
ect, ect...???
The more info the better!
5 years ago i was 3 weeks in the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Canmore,
Revelstoke, Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, Wapta Icefields)
But since we are bringing our 1 year old daughter this will be a
different
trip. I would like to see some of those places again though, as i can
imagine they will also be very beautifull in summertime.
Thanks a lot!
Sincerely

The short answer is NO, Quebec is not part of "the East Coast", but a
part of Quebec (Gaspe Peninsula) is part of the East Coast. <g> And all
the roads are good!
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are definitely on
the East Coast, but they prefer to identify themselves as "the Maritime
Provinces"; the federal government and the central news media call it
"Atlantic Canada" because they like using big, ponderous phrases.
Newfoundland is also a "Maritime Province", but since you're not likely
to be going there, don't worry about it. Besides, the Provincial
government is in the middle of renaming the place, and you might become
as confused as they are! (And they speak an old English that's confusing
enough.)
If I had 4 weeks, I would see the following places:
* Ottawa - Parliament Hill, National Gallery, Museum of Civilization,
Museum of Science & Technology
* Montreal - an exciting city, then Route 40 to
* Quebec City - North America's only walled city; history and culture
eveywhere,
* then cross the river to Route 20, or
* take Route 138 along the North Shore through "le vrai Quebec", then
cross to the South Shore by ferry at Matane (old summer resort town)
* then on to Gaspe, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
don't miss
* Cape Breton - Scottish culture in North America
* Louisbourg - original French fortress
* Acadia / l'Acadie - old French settlements, home of the "Cajuns" of
Louisiana
* Bay of Fundy - world's highest ocean tides
* summer theatres in Prince Edward Island
* lobster, lobster, lobster everywhere (especially in churches)
* then through the Eastern Townships to Sherbrooke, Granby, Magog
* return to Montreal via Route 10
Those are 4 weeks of relaxation, without having to spend long days
driving long distances. If you can sleep 3 nights out of 4 in your
camper van, you can do it at a relatively modest cost. Lots of beaches,
lots of warm water, lots of friendly people -- a nice way to spend the
summer!
Note 1 - you can be sure to find good, clean accommodation at Best
Western or similar chain motels whenever you feel the need
Note 2 - overnight camping in Nova Scotia is permitted only in
"approved" government or commercial campgrounds; use your discretion
Note 3 - be sure to arrange your vehicle insurance in advance, perhaps
through one of your credit cards, because if you have to pay the rental
agency's daily rates you won't be able to afford the gas!
Hope this helps! | |
