No duty would be due, as the car was to be returned to Canada; that's
pretty clear.

And yet Canadians drive their cars across the border all the time,
with no proof of anything (not that it's possible to prove you
-aren't- intending to sell the car illegally in the US) and without a
customs official even raising an eyebrow. Perfectly legally, too.
