Default Best Atlas

From and Australian planning a driving trip in Western Canada:

Can anyone suggest a good road atlas that covers western Canada and/or
Alaska and/or North West USA.

I am looking for a book format around A4 and preferably spiral bound.

I have checked several websites but it is difficult to know which is best
without some local knowledge and experience.

Wayne

The biggest (best?) publisher is probably Rand McNally; they produce the
largest selection of highway maps -- with detailed inserts for city
centres and attractions. They are available in several different
formats, from smaller than A4 right up to folio. Probably on CD-ROM as
well. Some publishers have editions printed on thin plastic, which
allows you to make your own notes and then erase at will.

Check with your local office of the Automobile Association. They may
have a travel books store (and you should take out a membership with
them anyway -- very useful if you run into car problems in Canada or the
USA.

Hope this helps!

Further thoughts: each state or province has a "standard" map for
tourists. Their Tourism or Highways department will probably mail you
one, probably free of charge.

Also, each state or province undoubtedly publishes special maps showing
all the State and National Parks. They emphasize the areas on either
side of each highway, showing viewpoints, lodgings, etc.
