Default UK to Gander

Anybody have an idea if there are any cheap direct flights to and from
the UK to Gander? It seems silly that the closest point to the UK should
be so expensive (according to searches for flights online) to get to
compared to flights to further destinations in Canada (that most of the
flights I've found stop off at first anyway).
